AYA-AWAKENINGS

26 Jun

AYA: Awakenings is a narrative documentary into the world and visions of ayahuasca shamanism, adapted from the cult book ‘Aya: a Shamanic Odyssey’ by Rak Razam. By blending narration directly from the book with video footage, interviews with practicing curanderos, samples of traditional icaros or magic songs, photographs and cutting edge special effects, Aya: Awakenings reproduces the inner landscape of the visionary state in unprecedented detail, invoking a spiritual awakening in the viewer.

L’écume des jours / Froth on the Daydream

22 May

I just went to see the last Michel Gondry (movie director: Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, La science des rêves ; videoclip maker: Crystalline – Björk, Rolling stones…) movie yesterday night, an adaptation of “Froth on the Daydream” (French: “L’Écume des Jours”), a 1947 novel by the French Surrealist novelist Boris Vian.

“Colin is a wealthy young man with a resourceful and stylish man-servant, Nicolas, as well as a fantastic olfactory-musical invention: the pianocktail. With dizzying speed, Colin meets and weds Chloé in a grand ceremony. Generously, Colin bequeaths a quarter of his fortune to his friends Chick and Alise so they too may marry…”

Gondry succeeds here to translate the hyper-surrealistic environment depicted in Vian’s novel.

Enjoy the trailer, and I hope you may have the opportunity to see the movie soon !

The psychedelic computer demos collection

23 Apr

For its 3rd birthday the DPV is featuring a series of psychedelic videos specials which will run between the 22 and the 28 of April 2013. Stay tuned for more of our psychedelic specials.

Back in the early 1980s software pirate groups started to incorporate audiovisual introductions into their cracked releases. The intros evolved into a form of art, combining code wizardry with music and graphics. With the forming of groups and organizing of competitions, the demoscene was born.

Coders today can either use powerful modern hardware and GPU effects or milk vintage hardware for all its worth.

There has been a strong current of psychedelic visionary demos in the scene throughout its history. The following videos provide a glimpse into this pulsating stream of imagination.

These “friedimations” compel one to give them repeated viewings and pause to inspect them frame by frame (look at the writing in the brain folds, any familiar acronyms?). They work on a Tuesday as well as on a Fry-day.
