The Altered State of Drugachusetts

3 Feb

A few weeks ago I published a post about HR Pufnstuf the classic psychedelic children TV show of the 1960s.

In the late 1990s the HBO show “MR . Show with Bob and David” featured a short parody of the show called “The Altered Sates of Drugachusetts”, and even you don’t know the original show (Pufnstuf) this is one of the funniest psychedelic parodies I’ve ever scence.

Balinese Baraka monkey chant (Kecak)

The Balinese Kecak dance/chant is one of the most mesmerizing parts of the film Baraka (1992). Truly amazing.

Ha-Kochav Ha-Kachol opening scene – 1995

25 Aug

Ha-Kochav Ha-Kachol (Blue Panet) is probably the only Israeli psychedelic feature film ever done. It is a tale about a guy who arrives at the Tel Aviv Bus Station, gets his stuff stolen by a hobo, and then embarks on a cosmic adventure. Directed by Gur Bentvich the film  used to be screened at the Tel-Aviv Cinematheque every Friday on midnight for a number years during the nineties.

The opening sequence, has a very low-budget but well made psychedelic animation sequence.

Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – The trippy hotel scene

9 Jun

It is hard to believe but the amazing hotel scene from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, one of the classic psychedelic works of literature and film, has not been featured on the DPV as yet. Today is a good day to set things right. The trippy hotel scene, featuring Johnny Depp is a great example for the very distinct type of psychedelic humor where the joke lies in the gap between what the protagonist conceives through his hallucinations, and the actual ‘objective’ reality as it is seen by the camera/others. The hotel scene is  one of the best renditions of a psychedelic experience on film, and one of the most hilarious at that.

Arise Chapter 01 – Instructions

30 Jan

One of the most psychedelic and ingenious videos in the history of the internet (Even though it was created before the web,  for video tapes). Ivan Stang, founder of the Church of the SubGenius directed this wildly ingenious video clip.

It is interesting to note, that many of the effects of the video tape, according to the speaker are similar if not identical to those of psychedelic substances. However, the tone itself is much more commanding and sinister than that usually associated with psychedelics.

The video looks like some kind of parody on mind control and hallucinations, but what I find to be the most hilarious is the name “Church of the SubGenius”, created intentionally in order to become semantically ossified and for people to start using it and say that they are “part of Church of the SubGenius”  without thinking about what the actual meaning is of the name is…

And here is another one…

Billy Ze Kick – Mangez-Moi

14 Jan

Billy Ze Kick are a French band from the 1990s, with lots of psychedelic references and overtones. Their song “Mangez-Moi” (eat me) in which the band goes mushroom picking in the forest and different magic mushrooms beg them to eat them and promise to open their minds, was a big hit in 1990s France. Apparently not everybody realized what the song was really about…

Billy Ze Kick also had a very funny song about OCB rolling papers.

All these songs are much funnier when you speak French (I don’t, but I had some French speaking people explain them to me).

Edo Amin – Si Hanetek Hatotali, from Eddie King

8 Dec

Back in 1992 Gidi Dar created the legendary Israeli film “Eddie King“, then Edo Amin created “Si Hanetek Hatotali” (The peak of ultimate disconnection) which became the hymn of an Israeli generation. A great song with a cool psychedelic clip which makes my heart leap with joy.
