Balloon Land (1935)- Ub Iwerks

24 Apr

Take a journey to the clouds with friendly balloon creatures and trees that squeeze goo out of their noses. But watch out for that evil Pin Cushion Man!Ub-Iwerks

Ub Iwerks designed and co-created Mickey Mouse with his good friend, Walt Disney. After animating many of the early Mickey Mouse cartoons, including “Steam Boat Willie”, Ub and Walt had a falling out and Ub left to form his own studio. Iwerks Studio opened in 1930. Thank goodness!

Trip Scene from “Beavis and Butthead Do America”- segment directed by Chris Pyrnoski

11 Apr

I remember watching “Beavis and Butthead Do America” at a Viacom watching party. At the time, I was working at Nickelodeon and Chris Pyrnoski was kind of in-house famous for getting his own show, Downtown, on MTV. The trip scene was by far my favorite part of the movie. After hearing that Mr.Pyrnoski had directed it, I was an instant fan. He has since gone on to great things like starting his own studio, Titmouse, and directing on the oh so awesome show Metalocalypse. He uploaded an early animatic from the movie:

Roky Erickson Demon Angel A Day and Nite with Roky Erickson Halloween 1984-George Cedarskoog

4 Apr

Last week’s post had me gushing on the majestic beauty of the California coast, but before I was a Californian, I was (am) a Texan. Spending many of my formative years in Austin, TX, exposed me to the psychedelic, horrifying, extra-terrestrial sweet sweet genius of Roky Erickson. Demon Angel gives us a glimpse into his peculiar mind with heart melting performances by Roky. The film opens with my all time favorite Roky song Bloody Hammer. Actually, Bloody Hammer, is my all-time favorite song EVER. Check out this version:

There’s much more Roky to post, but I will save more for later to prolong the Roky experience. I hope you enjoy.

“Celebration at Big Sur”- Baird Bryant and Johanna Demetrakas

28 Mar

“Celebration at Big Sur” is a 1969 film documenting the Folk Festival at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA. You can find the entire film in bits on youtube and it’s available as a DVD. In this 9 minute clip, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young perform “Down by the River”. The performance starts at about 49 seconds into the clip, but there is a lot of good vintage hippy stuff before and after the music.

After spending last week travelling the California coast, I’m in total Pacific Ocean bliss. I love seeing all the aerial shots of the coastline in this film almost as much as I love David Crosby’s fringe jacket and Stephen Stills’ geometric poncho. The Esalen Institute is still around. You can sign up for self actualization workshops and retreats through their website.

I took these photos last year at a campground in Big Sur. You can see the bridge in the first photo in the aerial shots. What I didn’t get a photo of, was the terribly cute sea otter that would swim around the cove with a seagull perched upon his little belly.

Forever Pavot- “Green Nap” by Nicolas Fong

14 Mar

I love the the groovy drawn smoke swirls in this animated music video by Nicolas Fong for the Parisian band Green Nap.

You can find more Nicolas Fong’s work including a bunch of psychedelic GIFS on his http://those-visions-have-no-end.tumblr.com/ site.

“10,000 Emerald Pools”- Børns

7 Mar

I’m a little obsessed with this video today. It may tend more towards the dreamy side than pyschedelic, but it definitely feels other-wordly. Børns is a LA singer songwriter whose current claim to fame is that he lives in a tree-house- quite dreamy. The ethereal vocals combined with clever underwater footage make it easy to fall into Børns’ world.
