I’ve posted before cocorosie videos, and I’ll probably have to post some more in the future. Their music, lyrics and videos are always interesting and psychedelic.
Matthew Dear vs. Morgan Beringer
7 FebMorgan Beringer visualizes the music of Matthew Dear with amazing results. Apparently shots of liquid were mixed/layered with themselves and other footage using masks. Even the emboss filter effect works in this, it’s like liquid frost on a surface.
The Sparkling Darkness of “Vessel” by Zola Jesus
5 FebIt is not always easy to tell the difference between psychedelic and surreal. Both aesthetics are obsessed with dreams and surfaces and the dissolving ego, both are very playful. Usually – not always – you will find a lot more light and color in psychedelic art. On the other hand it tends to get closer to the surreal as soon as darker tones are struck.
This is what makes this clip interesting. It is genuinely dark and psychedelic. Until the moth in the final seconds it avoids symbolism and sticks to the sparkling manifold of the surface. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw more of this merging of psychedelic and gothic aesthetics in the future.
The Little Girl and the Squid
4 FebI liked the aesthetics and feel of this one, done by Will Chason based on two parts out of a rock opera by his band “The Dutchmen”.
Twentytwohundred by Syntaks
3 Feb
From the video description: “Syntaks’ Jakob Skott created this video for the song “Twentytwohundred” (from his group’s full-length Ylajali), in which the parallels between the Danish artist’s visual and aural sensibilities are on full display. Warm, saturated colors and dreamy, abstract imagery fill the clip with a sense of nostalgic wonder, echoing the music’s romantic mingling of the real and unreal.”
“Growing Clarity” by Rambutan
29 JanTape Drift Records founder Eric Hardiman is teaching us some heavy mind kung fu.
Enjoy!
A Trip To The Moon
27 Jan
Georges Méliès’ 1901 classic Le Voyage dans la Lune is a psychedelic adventure. Even more so with color and set to AIR’s new song Sonic Armada.
R.E.M Music videos
23 Jan
It was some surprise for me to find out that the music videos to two of R.E.M’s most well-known singles from the 90’s have a somewhat psychedelic style to them.
Both of them have hallucinatory qualities to them, but I especially like how the beautiful video for “Losing My Religion” has the feeling that it takes place inside someone’s mind. The things that the imagery does to the watcher’s imagination… I guess that’s the sort of thing that Terrence McKenna said about it that “There is a transcendental dimension beyond language…”.
I would also recommend to watch them without the sound, especially the first one. The images can speak for themselves.
“Ambling Alp” by Yeasayer
22 JanThis clip to Yeasayer’s “Ambling Alp” reminds me strongly of the work of Alejandro Jodorowsky.
