The Banana Bender – Arik Einstein (1977)

2 Oct

In 1977 the Arnei Lipsei and Dudu Shalita from the Ein Gedi studios in Israel created this rare video for the classic 1968 song “Mekofef Habananot” (The Banana Bender) by Israeli singer Arik Einstein. The topic of the song is a mysterious creature that lives in the trees and that is responsible for bending bananas and giving them their curved shape, as well as adding cracks and holes to the various fruits and vegetables.

This was the first colored animation video produced in Israel, and the style reminds one of classic 1970s psychedelic animation. Hope you enjoy it.

Recently I’ve been telling people that I have a deep love for motion. Nearly any form of it: roller coasters, motor cycles, board sports, driving, flying… I love it all. I suspect that the creator of this video shares this passion.

Oingo Boingo on “The Gong Show”

18 Jul

Last night, my husband and I were watching old episodes of that 1970’s daytime TV mayhem known as The Gong Show, and remembering how much joy it brought to our childhoods. Created and emceed by Chuck Barris, The Gong Show, featured a variety of acts judged and often gonged by celebrity judges. In this clip, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, take over the stage in psychedelic outfits and over the top musicianship. Can you spot famous movie soundtrack composer (Batman, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Edward Scissorhands) Danny Elfman?

The Devils // Ken Russell, 1971

20 May

Ken Russell’s controversial 1971 film incorporates sexually explicit hallucinatory sequences into this story based on the supposed demonic possessions in that took place in 17th Century Loudon, France.

An order of Ursuline nuns begin to exhibit wild, uncontrolled behavior thought to be led by Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed), a proud priest, who has recently gained political control of Loudon. Sister Jeanne des Anges (Vanessa Redgrave), the sexually repressed hunchback Mother Superior of the convent becomes infatuated with Grandier, and her striking sexual fantasies haunt her guilty conscious.

Once word of Grandier’s secret marriage to another woman reaches Jeanne, she collapses into fits of hysteria and claims to have been possessed by the Devil through Grandier. Other nuns in the convent also claim to be possessed and the convent explodes into a frenzy of sexual outbursts and bizarre public exorcisms.

Russell boldly depicts the effects of sexual oppression mixed with religious mania. The censored scenes of the “demonic possessions” include a psychedelic orgy of naked nuns “raping” a statue of Christ and Sister Jeanne masturbating with a human bone. The uncut version of The Devils is a mind blowing, audacious exploration of ecstasy (both religious and sexual).

Curious Alice 1971

4 Feb

This drug abuse educational film portrays an animated fantasy based upon the characters in “Alice in Wonderland.” The film shows Alice as she toured a strange land where everyone had chosen to use drugs, forcing Alice to ponder whether drugs were the right choice for her. The “Mad Hatter” character represents Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD), the “Dormouse” represents sleeping pills, and the “King of Hearts” represents heroin. Ultimately, Alice concluded that drug abuse is senseless.
