The eternal male archetype with its many forms goes on a dance with the eternal female archetype with its many forms, shape-shifting across the dance floor, in this amusing and very special animation by Gerrit Van Dijk,
Spook Sport (1940)- Mary Ellen Bute
24 Oct
In the spirit of Halloween, this week’s post features spooks, ghosts and bats in Mary Ellen Bute’s experimental animated film from 1940. Mary Ellen Bute was a groundbreaking filmmaker in her own right, but her gender makes her contributions to early experimental cinema all the more powerful. Unfortunately, the you tube upload incorrectly labels Norman MacLaren as the director (the fabulous Mac Laren was indeed an animator on the film, but direction was all Ms. Bute’s). Just look at how awesome she was!
Bloc Party

Matthew Stephenson: They Both Explode
20 OctA short hallucinatory tale of consumption, sorrow, redemption and vomit.
Matthew describes the creation process:
The film was made mostly out of card and found objects and shot using a primitive multiplane system made from a desk, some picture-frames and an old pillow case. I used Dragon software and a second hand Lumix FZ50 camera. It was all done ‘in camera’ so there is no compositing or anything; what you see is what the camera saw, lying on the floor, looking up through panes of glass with lights shining down on it.
No Brain
17 OctThere are many flavors of psychedelia, and one–I think–is thoughtlessness. In these videos, there’s not too much to contemplate, but I’d say each is a pleasure to watch. Though I can’t recall the source, a few simple words from an album review still stick with me years and years later, “Give your brain the night off.” This weekend I provide you with three samples of 3D animation to do just that.

17 OctThis gem was suggested by my friend, animator Amy Lockhart. Amy has been featured on the DPV blog a couple of times in the past with “Miss Edmonton Teenburger 1983” and “Walk for Walk”
Purusha – Chih-han Lin (Hannah)
12 Oct“Chih Han (Hannah) Lin’s Purusha (2015) is a 2.5D animation about a biomorphic character of the same name, who wishes to be beautiful. She lives in a world with other creatures whose elaborate patterns she envies and seeks to steal for her own use. Purusha’s use of experimental colors and patterns in a watercolor-like painting style evokes a mysterious imaginary world that conveys the important message of loving oneself as one is.”
