The dark side of psychedelia… Brought to you by Andy Warhol

15 Aug

The pop artist Andy Warhol created in the mid-Sixties the “Exploding Plastic Inevitable”, a series of multimedia shows featuring his experimental films, dancers (and actors) from his Factory, and performances by the band The Velvet Underground, who were managed by him.

The show, as it was seen live, must have been a very trippy, freaky experience. This did fit the experimental attitude of The Velvet Underground who, in an age of the “flower power” and “Peace & Love”, touched darker and edgier subjects in their lyrics and avant-garde sounds in their music.

“taking drugs to make music to take drugs to” – psychedelia in the 80’s and early 90’s with Spacemen 3

20 Feb

While we witness a little return of interest towards psychedelic culture since a few years, it was quite rare that popular subculture would refer to psychedelia in those bleak mid 80’s (at least before rave would bring back rainbows, bubbles and acid). Still a few groups like Psychic TV and Spacemen 3 kept the endless trance inducing jams and the quest for musical (et al.) mind exploration going.

Cinématique // juggling, dance and Video !

2 Feb

Using different juggling, dance and object manipulation technics, a software (e-motion, self developed), Adrien Mondot and collaborators create incredible shows with amazing real vs. virtual interactions !

Founded in 2004, the company AdrienM has set its goal to research the art of movement using juggling and digital art as a medium to explore the imaginary.

After 3 seasons at the Manege in Reims, during which two shows were created: “Convergences 1.0 ” in 2005 – a peculiar dreamlike exploration of juggling – and ” Retime” in 2008 which deconstructs the temporal phases of juggling , the company is presently in residence at the Hexagone, a national theater based in Meylan (Isere).

This is where, in January 2010, it opened its newest creation: “Cinematique” the 2009 grand prize winner at the “Bains Numeriques” festival of Enghien-les-Bains. Besides its continued work in the world of the stage through wokshops, the company also created a modular exhibit (XYZT) which opened at the Espace Jean-Legendre in Compiegne in April 2010.

Broadcast- Papercuts

22 Jan

I used to love this band so much! long stoned afternoons of a Jerusalem summer listening to Broadcast, but that hadn’t happened for a couple of years now. Sadly, I started looking for their videos only this week, when I heard about the untimely death of Trish Keenan, their lead singer.  The hypnotic object spinning in this video is a dream machine, that 7eit posted about here. So beautiful.

Clinic – ‘The Witch’

27 Nov

Following the recent Jefferson Airplane video, Here’s one from Clinic, a Liverpool indie-rock band. The 1960’s style light shows still works for psychedelic rock, only now it has that added nostalgia that goes well with their retro chic. I started with their video for ‘The witch’ an than got to their live performance that of course applies a trippy light show, and in between found a few more nice videos that go way beyond this convention, but retain a colorful delirious look. Soon on DPV!
