Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) trippin on Computer Games

27 Mar

Yellow Magic Orchestra had a great sense for the psychedelic dimension in the electronic dreams of the late 70’s and early 80’s. And the clip for the track computer games has it all:  early computer games, electronically generated images, Kraftwerk and traditional symbols in one mind-blowing trip (to the left).

Rebel Clown Army

26 Mar

Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army (CIRCA) is an international theatrical collective of anti-authoritarian activists, dressed as soldier-clowns. I sometimes see them in demonstrations in Israel an Palestine, and feel that their protest is the strongest, most effective, non-violent and unstoppable of any other group of protesters on the streets. Even when they get arrested or suffer from police brutality, the images they produce are hilarious, and are a great demonstration of the stupidity of the state and it’s forces. They are psychedelic in their creativity and humor, the direct fluffy assault on people’s conciseness in attempt to broaden and open it.

“Because rebels transform everything – the way they live, create, love, eat, laugh, play, learn, trade, listen, think and most of all the way they rebel.”

Alice in Wonderland (1951)

25 Mar

“In a world of my own all the flowers would have very extra-special powers/They would sit and talk with me for hours”. Alice only needed to go down a particular rabbit hole and drink that magic potion and she got to the place she wanted.

A one charming Alice from the classic 1951 Disney version of “Alice in Wonderland”.

Fehérlófia (1981)

22 Mar

Marcell Jankovics kicks ass and comes from Hungary. His Fehérlófia aka Son of the White Mare is quite a jewel among the videos posted here so far, because it is a feature length animation done in non-stop psychedelic style! Playlist link.

A more recent feature by Jankovics, Ének a csodaszarvasról / Song of the Miraculous Hind (2002), has shamanic episodes, which are done in a style that reminds me of Huichol art. The Youtube version has sucky picture quality and no subtitles, but if you’re not put off by this you can find the rest of the movie by clicking “Watch in Youtube” and looking at the related videos or in the uploader’s channel.

KaiKai & KiKi – Takashi Murakami

21 Mar

“Kaikai & Kiki” is 2005 teaser for a longer animation video by Takashi Murakami, which has been featured on the DPV before. While we haven’t been able to find the full film, we are always ecstatic at any new eye-candy from this Japanese genius of pop-culture psychedelia.

Beauty in Synthesis: the Art of Laurie Spiegel

20 Mar

When asked why she turned to digital synthesizers and software engineering after working with analog systems for a long time, American composer Laurie Spiegel answered that she was looking for a way to apply memory and logic to the freedom that the analog synthesizers gave her. A piece of paper as a composers tool provides a kind of memory that is missing in the old analog means of electronic music making. On the other hand you have control over the actual sound production when working with analog synthesizers. You can experiment with the results of your decisions in way that was impossible before. Computers and digital synthesizers now offer you the same degree of independence for experimentation while providing facilities for the use of memory and logical manipulation in the process of composition.

Mary Jane (1968) – The ultimate anti-drug propaganda film

18 Mar

“Mary Jane, the excuse for anything!”. Mary Jane’s trailer is a superb example of 1960s anti-drug propaganda. You can’t help but laugh while watching it, and can’t help by feeling disturbed the fact that this kinds of movies were the ones shaping public perception of Cannabis in the 1960s. At least this shows you, what a long way we’ve gone from “Mary Jane” to Nancy Botwin’s “Weeds”.

I wonder who were the young actors in this anti-drug film. Either young squares chosen to portray hippies, or hippie sell outs. Anyway, I hope that when they watch it now they feel enormous shame for what they’ve done with their youth, or at least have a good laugh about it.

“This is a movie. But only as real as life”. Yeah, right!
