Psychedelic flamenco

21 Aug

There is nothing like watching a flamenco show while high. The intensity of music, the dancers, and the colorful lights in the caves are just mesmerizing.

Good flamenco is hard to get by if you are a tourist visiting in Spain. Flamenco is more of a people’s thing. People play and sing it spontaneously in the house and in the street. Flamenco in a club is a relatively unnatural concept.

Yet, fortunately, there is some amazing Flaemenco on you YouTube. This first video by the legendary Flamenco singer and dancer Carmen Amaya is just crazy with the energies, especially the last bit.

The video below displays some known flamenco artists in a home setting. I love the intensity of the setting, and the different relationships between the singers which reminds me in a way of the energies in some psychedelic ceremonies where people make music.

So if you are around the area, be sure not to miss it and come say hello to me while you are there. It’s going to be spectacular! “4 Givings” Colin Barton

13 Dec

Los Angeles Filmmaker and very groovy friend Colin Barton takes us on a highly textured psychedelic journey using cameraless direct on film animation techniques.

Colin says:

Based on multiples of fours, ‘4 Givings’ moves through the cycle of the day with the central theme of forgiveness, release, renewal, and acceptance. Following an alchemical motif, earth, wind, fire, and water recur and are  represented by archetypes and abstractions.

Animated on fours, this all 35mm direct on film animation was composited in After Effects.

AEROSYN-LEX MESTROVIC

13 Nov

SCRIPTURA VITAE is a short-film based on the artwork of Aerosyn-Lex Mestrovic. Commissioned as part of the Random Acts arts platform by Channel 4, this film marks the directorial debut of artist and designer, Aerosyn-Lex.

A poetic performance piece exploring duality, SCRIPTURA VITAE stars famed Japanese actress Miho Nikaido, best known for her role in the Japanese cult classic film “Tokyo Decadence”, alongside Butoh performer and dancer Maki Shinagawa.

Featuring new original music by DIPLO and standout tracks Parallel World by avant-garde London-based producer ACTRESS and Geisha by the young British duo, PLAITUM.

Through the heart of Detroit’s Automotive industry flowed a Rich, Deep, Viscous, Black Liquid; Motor Oil.These works of “Ink & Pressure” draw a visual correlation between Black Ink and Black Oil. Though the two substances may share a similar appearance their properties and interactions with the environment around them are wholly different. Oil is a profoundly indelible substance, leaving its mark through history economically, environmentally and sociologically; yet rarely do we see the imprint of the substance itself. Through these works I hope to re-contextualize a substance which has had a profound impact on the history of this great city.
