“Psychedelic Zion” follows the ups and downs of three rave organizers who operate under the banner “Peace and Love Production.” Filmed over the course of two years, director Isri Halpern follows the trio from their first ecstatic parties on the hillsides of the Galilee, into the living rooms of their religious, working-class families, and deep into the fray of their eventual and sometimes violent clashes with the police. In the midst of a public furor, they take their case to the government and the Supreme Court, fighting for the right to live out their psychedelic dreams.

Roky Erickson Demon Angel A Day and Nite with Roky Erickson Halloween 1984-George Cedarskoog

4 Apr

Last week’s post had me gushing on the majestic beauty of the California coast, but before I was a Californian, I was (am) a Texan. Spending many of my formative years in Austin, TX, exposed me to the psychedelic, horrifying, extra-terrestrial sweet sweet genius of Roky Erickson. Demon Angel gives us a glimpse into his peculiar mind with heart melting performances by Roky. The film opens with my all time favorite Roky song Bloody Hammer. Actually, Bloody Hammer, is my all-time favorite song EVER. Check out this version:

There’s much more Roky to post, but I will save more for later to prolong the Roky experience. I hope you enjoy.

Wash out your third eye with rainbow interference colors… A thin soap film sequence, captured with a light microscope under incident illumination. The visuals are quite remarkable after the halfway point.

Dan Deacon – When I Was Done Dying

What an astounding thing collaborative effort can be. A few names and styles I recognized, a few I did not, and this video has made me awfully excited to check out the works of the unfamiliar ones.

And at this point, I think it bears mentioning that this is just one of a fair number of videos on this blog that have been featured on Adult Swim. Adult Swim, I think, is much closer to What MTV Should Be than MTV itself is. Practically everyone I know in their late teens and early twenties appreciates at least one show on Adult Swim, and the music videos they broadcast are consistently worthy selections.

Coolness is the supreme value by which networks and products are to be judged when you’re aiming for this demographic. And I’m sorry, MTV, but these days it seems that Adult Swim is a cooler kid than you are.
