MARIA SABINA-EL TRI

13 Apr

Maria Sabina was a mexican curandera who worked with psilocybin mushrooms and it was through her that the west first became aware of the existence of the magic mushrooms, when mycologist R. Gordon Wasson and his wife Valentina met her and became the first westerners to participate in a traditional mushroom ceremony, in 1955. The rest was history, as this event, and the ensuing article in LIFE magazine were among the most important catalysts leading to the psychedelic revolution of the 1960s. Those of you who don’t know who Maria Sabina might want to first go and read her Wikipedia article.

This song, by Mexican rock group El Tri, celebrates the figure of Maria Sabina calling her “a symbol of the wisdom of love.” Great song.

Jan Svankmajer films

2 Mar

It was hard to believe. I searched the DPV a number of time before I could believe that we don’t have anything by Czech master Jan Svankmajer yet. For those of you who don’t know Svankmajer, a more significant  introduction to the work of the Czech animator might be required than I can supply here, and you can find some information here on wikipedia.

Here I’ll just say that Svankmajer is a highly renowned animator and filmmaker whose work has been celebrated by the likes of Terry Gilliam and Milos Forman ever since the 1980s. These two short movies, “Dimensions of Dialogue” and “Tma, Svetlo, Tma” should serve as a decent introduction to his highly surrealistic world.

Oh my, it’s Pickle Surprise! Tom Rubnitz, director of the 1987 cult documentary “Wigstock: the Movie”, takes us on a groovy psychedelic journey in this 1989 gem. Can you find everybody’s favorite drag star Ru Paul?

The Video Data Bank website has a higher quality short clip and offers a DVD of Rubnitz’s work for purchase.
