Tobacco – Hawker Boat

20 Jun

Sometimes psychedelia lies in a total lack of context. When I envision an alien race observing life on Earth for the first time, I imagine an experience like watching this video. Hopefully they have a sense of humor.

ICAROS

6 May

Thirty years ago, Marcel left Spain to escape the military service, leaving his family and his social life. After living in a hippie community, he took refuge in the jungle of Costa Rica, where he lives alone, naked and in complete harmony with nature. Marcel discovered himself healer and practice rituals of taking ayahuasca, inducing visions and epiphanies that earned him the epithet of entheogen (Inner God generator). Only a few visitors joined him- here, young women in search of truth, such nymphs listening a shaggy Pan .

In the silence of the jungle…

Histiophryne Psychedelica

1 Apr

In France, April fools day is called “Poisson d’avril” meaning April Fish.

Here is a 2009 scientific discovery in Indonesia, h.Psychedelica is a weird fish:

Unlike any other known species of fish, H. psychedelica hops along the reefs where it lives, using its fins to push off the surface while squirting jets of water from a gill opening on each side. Other types of frogfish have been observed jettisoning themselves from the ocean floor before swimming but none have been seen hopping. With its tail curled to one side, it has the appearance of a fish without purpose or control. It seems to bounce randomly from rock to rock, protected from sharp coral by thick, gelatinous folds of skin.

About the size of an adult fist, the fish also has forward-facing eyes, leading to speculation that it may have binocular vision much like humans.

Curious Alice 1971

4 Feb

This drug abuse educational film portrays an animated fantasy based upon the characters in “Alice in Wonderland.” The film shows Alice as she toured a strange land where everyone had chosen to use drugs, forcing Alice to ponder whether drugs were the right choice for her. The “Mad Hatter” character represents Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD), the “Dormouse” represents sleeping pills, and the “King of Hearts” represents heroin. Ultimately, Alice concluded that drug abuse is senseless.

Xuxa

XUXA

Oh Xuxa. Brazilian kids TV show Xuxa was a staple of Spanish language television in the late eighties and early nineties. Every week, she would wow her audience with bright, fun and groovy sets, including a hot pink lip adorned space ship. Her shows took place in front of a live audience of happily smiling children with Xuxa clad in her signature outfit of hot pants, thigh high boots and shoulder-padded jacket dancing, singing and spreading the word of love and acceptance. There was always a game portion with Chicos vs Las Chicas competing by doing activities like straddling a big greased cylinder and pushing themselves along racing to the finish line. I never saw a show where Xuxa wasn’t moved to tears at some point by a heartwarming story. Oh, and the paquitas-her cheerleader dance team who made their own claim to fame. Unfortunately, the early 90’s american version lost a lot of the wow factor. It’s difficult to find clips of the Brazilian one, but here a few goodies.

Xuxa sings her hit song “llarie”- bad video copy, but the energy is palpable

There’s Gonna Be Some Rock n Roll This Winter

20 Dec

This tune has become a staple amongst my former flatmates and I during this time of year. Actually, we sing it most of the year, but it gets a far better reception when we’re in the appropriate season. The video brings us back to the grand old days of glam rock, when psychedelic visuals were left to the costume department. A time when Roy Wood (who is better known for his days with the Electric Light Orchestra) looked like a Muppet from another dimension. And those lyrics are warm and fuzzy enough to bring holiday cheer to the biggest Grinches around. Like the bassist. Honestly, why is he being such a goon?

Oh well. At the very least, if you find yourself struggling to find the right politically correct greeting this season, I’d just go with telling folks to “Have a wonderful rock and roll winter, baby.”
