Pink Floyd – The Wall

13 Oct

Empty Spaces as an example:

The complete movie:

Pink Floyd’s the Wall is arguably one of the most intriguing and imaginative albums in the history of rock music. Since its release in 1979, and the subsequent movie of 1982, the Wall has become synonymous with, if not the very definition of, the term “concept album.” Aureally explosive on record and visually explosive on the screen, the Wall traces the life of the fictional protagoinst, Pink Floyd, from his boyhood days in war-torn England to his self-imposed isolation as a world-renownedrock star, leading to a climax that is as questionably cathartic as it is destructive.

I am The Walrus – Across the universe

6 Oct

(Directed and written by: JULIE TAYMOR, 2007)

At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, Revolution Studios’ Across the Universe is an original movie musical springing from the imagination of renowned director Julie Taymor (Frida, Titus, and the Broadway smash hit musical “The Lion King”) and writers Dick Clement & Ian La Frenais (The Commitments).
A love story set against the backdrop of the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, mind exploration and rock ‘n roll, the film moves from the dockyards of Liverpool to the creative psychedelia of Greenwich Village, from the riot-torn streets of Detroit to the killing fields of Vietnam. The star-crossed lovers, Jude (Jim Sturgess) and Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), along with a small group of friends and musicians, are swept up into the emerging anti-war and counterculture movements, with “Dr. Robert” (Bono) and “Mr. Kite” (Eddie Izzard) as their guides. Tumultuous forces outside their control ultimately tear the young lovers apart, forcing Jude and Lucy – against all odds – to find their own way back to each other.

Dream Machine

3 Oct

This is a video of the Dream Machine Brion Gysin and Ian Summerville invented and build after reading William Grey Walter‘s book, The Living Brain. It is a nice diy approach to making mechanical interfaces for psychedelic experiences and experiments widely available.

I hope to write a whole post on mechanical interfaces for conciousness manipulation (compared to chemical interfaces like psychoactive substances) soon.

You can find a java based online version of the dream machine here.

Form Vs. Content

23 Sep

On this site we explore the aesthetics of psychedlic, trying to answer the question “what is psychedelic aesthetic?” Recently while i was looking at some videos that I intend to publish on the DPV i realized that we might be doing something wrong.  WE gave in to the seperation between form and content which is the exact opposite message from the psychedelic message. Psychedelics liquefy the boundaries between form and content. During the psychedlic experience what you see is often how and what you feel. Abstract figures turn into emotions and thought. In a way the psychedelic experience is one of the greatest supports to the thought that the medium is the message.

This video of Allan Watts might not be considered psychedlic visualy by some, but my opinionis is that  it’s  visual part is just as psychedelic as the content part. In fact it’s hard for me to seperate the content from the form on this one. The way the nature is filmed, the way that Watts himself is filmed has a psychedelic notion to it. Many times we tend to define fluorescent colors and fractalic shapes  as the essence of the psychedelic visualisation, but by that we dismiss the psychedlic visualisation of harmonic nature. Nature that seems to sing in harmony, every leaf in place, every ant in a harmonic order. I think this video captures this side of the psychedelic aesthetics, not only in content but also in form.

Tripping with friends

18 Sep

“The camera won’t catch it” I told J. when we went on our last mushroom trip, overlooking the city from a near mountain. he said that whatever the camera can catch will be enough. It’s true, some home videos depicting people in trips can make one almost share their state of conciseness. maybe it’s because of the DIY feel, a slice of life that is less flamboyant but can be more convincing than any computer generated psychedelic visualization. So call some friends, film yourselves from the other side, just add a cheap effect and dreamy sound and spread your experience to millions of youtube viewers!
