More Psychedelic PC Gaming: The Unfinished Swan

4 Sep

This one is kind of picking up the thread from The Devil’s Tuning Fork and the recent Painting Reality post.

Like The Devil’s Tuning Fork you are exploring your surroundings from a first person perspective through creative interaction. The world may be already there and finished, but your possibilities of interaction depend on you filling the – in this case big white or big black – blanks.

Mushroom Enhanced Kung Fu Fighting: Rag Doll Kung Fu

28 Aug

The original Rag Doll Kung Fu was an independently developed (by the now “game of the year”-famous makers of Little Big Planet) drug infested rag doll fighting game. It was blasting with marijuana leaves, explicit mushroom abuse and colorful space and time bending effects. I would say it was THE stoner-movie among video games.

You can still play it and there is a free-to-play demo available. Check out the games homepage.

Psychedelic Indie Gaming: Spheres of Chaos

21 Aug

Another secret classic of psychedelic independent pc-gaming. At first glance Spheres of Chaos might be just another Asteroids clone. But after playing it for only a few minutes one realizes that this one is aiming  for your brain… to burst into millions of colorful pieces.

From a review found on the games homepage:
“Imagine a world where instead of using his experiences with LSD to become an evangelist of therapeutic psychadelia, Timothy Leary had instead opted to learn assembler and program low-budget shmups for pc-download.”

Download the game for free here.

Gems from the German Psychedelic Underground: Amon Düül II

14 Aug

This is one remarkable find in the youtube galaxy: early footage of Amon Düül II performing psychedelic punk freak-outs blended with beautiful shots of a strangely solemn german countryside. As far as I know the camera is operated by a young Wim Wenders.

Everyday Psychedelia Pt.2: Night Flights

7 Aug

Whenever I book a flight to a big city I try to make it a night landing. Those pulsing breathing organisms of light look so alien and soothing.

Space Siren and Sleepy Sweet by Pram

31 Jul

You might very well ask:  so, what is supposed to be psychedelic about the clip above? Isn’t this just  a bunch of very normal scientists really involved in what they are doing? Well, I can not say you are wrong. But there is just something that strikes me odd about the way their curiosity shows… also one of the papier-mâché aliens has, you know, kinda wide pupils (he’s in a dark room after all).

If you did like the Broadcast clips here and here, you might enjoy Pram’s weirdness as well. Check it out!

Broadcast and the Focus Group

vexyvex has posted Broadcasts beautiful papercuts clip on this site a while ago. Here are some of the clips from their collaboration with Julian House. They are alive with a playful and childlike psychedelic spirit mixed with lots of occult symbols and imagery.
