The Naked and Famous – The Sun

24 Apr

Sensual, to say the least.

DIIV – How Long Have You Known?

18 Apr

Just a little home-made, psychedelic alchemy.

Maximum the Hormone

11 Apr

Very nearly missed this one in my search for psychedelic videos, as I can’t say I’ve immersed myself in a whole lot of metal, and things don’t start to get visually psychedelic until around 1:43. Skip ahead if you like, though I think the video’s progression is made so much sweeter by taking it in the whole way through.

A bit of explanation for the super catchy line at the finish: Winny is apparently p2p software that was once quite popular in Japan, but isn’t really used so much anymore. Comparable to Napster.

Dan Deacon – When I Was Done Dying

4 Apr

What an astounding thing collaborative effort can be. A few names and styles I recognized, a few I did not, and this video has made me awfully excited to check out the works of the unfamiliar ones.

And at this point, I think it bears mentioning that this is just one of a fair number of videos on this blog that have been featured on Adult Swim. Adult Swim, I think, is much closer to What MTV Should Be than MTV itself is. Practically everyone I know in their late teens and early twenties appreciates at least one show on Adult Swim, and the music videos they broadcast are consistently worthy selections.

Coolness is the supreme value by which networks and products are to be judged when you’re aiming for this demographic. And I’m sorry, MTV, but these days it seems that Adult Swim is a cooler kid than you are.

Familjen

A friend of mine has told me he thinks this first one is a reference to a folk tale that involves a creature luring ordinary people out to the sea, appearing during a festival. He’s also told me that the vocalist’s accent is quite funny to most Swedes.

And this one is just a dream come true after having sat through a considerable number of stuffy church services growing up. Winner of a Grammy.

Thank you, Kyle, for introducing me.

Palaxy Tracks – Weird Weather

21 Mar

Simplicity has won me over once again.

Flairs

14 Mar
This video feels to me like a showcase of the toys that were advertised on the Nickelodeon network when I was growing up. Floam, Gak, Koosh balls. And then there’s the wardrobe… somewhere along the lines of Wayne’s World from a different world.

And if you weren’t sold on the first selection, here’s a list of all the ways that Lionel Flairs is allegedly better than Prince.

Rob Dougan – Clubbed to Death

7 Mar

Dramatic and ambiguous.

Mike Luck – Cityscape

28 Feb
WannaPlayDaily.com had these words from director Maxmana: “For this Music Video for Mike Luck I wanted to create a video game like drive journey through the desert landscape at 6 O’Clock in the morning. It was made to be projected or spanned over three screens. so if you happen to own a triple-head to go and have 3 screens attached, give it a wirl would you?”
I think he very much succeeded. I encourage you to watch it in full screen and crank the speakers up just a touch.

TV on the Radio – Second Song

21 Feb

I searched. Believe me, I searched for more on the making of this video. Maybe stop-motion techniques don’t vary that much, but I would love to watch a project like this unfold. I am eternally grateful that there are people in this world who make such visions a reality for the rest of us.
