Space Is The Place

6 Sep

Some kind soul uploaded the complete feature film of the radical jazz musician Sun Ra. It mixes intelligent alien life with ancient Egyptian art, black pride, God, the Devil and ho so wonderful music.

time/space extrusion experiments

Strata cut is an animation technique invented by David Daniels. He explains:

“Stratacut is the revealed technique in a way but what you are really doing is sculpting time. You are creating these blobby-spaghetti extrusions with a lot of distortions in them. You are calculating how they will be revealed in time. The potential energy that has been sculpted into them is revealed as kinetic energy once it is cut apart. So I tried to figure out all the possible geometric principals on which the twisting of the shapes would yield the ideal result; the blinking eyes, rotating faces, walking, etc.”

the whole interview in “The Art Of the Title Sequence” is highly recommended.

The next clip is from his cult student film “Buzz Box”, I think it’s brilliant, but might freak you out:

giant soap bubbles

Beautiful things that look like magic are sure to go nicely with whatever state of conciseness you’re at; and there is that “being inside a bubble” feeling you know; and all those double rainbows and morphing shape… Yep, giant soap bubbles are psychedelic.

Imagining the Tenth Dimension

28 Aug

Quantum physics challenges our normal daily perception of the world. scientist Rob Bryanton has a mind blowing video blog that tries to visualize these concepts, along with commentary on conciseness, language, human history and so on . Every video this genius posts turns me onto a dozen different directions, and of course, several other videos. so make sure you have enough time (althogh it seems that the flow of time is just an illusion: our way of sensing of the fourth spatial dimension. apparently we all have A LOT of time) and dive into his wonderful mind expanding blog:

OK Go – WTF?

This is a one-shot video, that to my opinion makes the most of the trail effect. I recommend the really sweet making-of video, where they coin the oh-so-useful term “Psychediculous”

The lines between psychedelic art and excessive commercial advertising can’t be more  blurred. it seems to be a part of a whole series, and the other videos are not any less pretty and trippy!

“Allahu Akbar attempts to come closer to that ultimate beauty and mystery which is God”

Ramadan Karim!

This video, directed by Mark Romanek for Madonna in 1995, is a homage to artists and mystics who explored the subconsciousness. it starts with Madonna, as some experimental or therapeutic subject, turns into some dream like state, the word “Lucid” appears on one of the screens. From a sterile, bright and high-tech-ish setting the video turns darker, more organic and mysterious. the visual vocabulary of this video contains quotations of three woman surrealist painters, here are some references:

Dorothea Tanning: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, 1943

Remedios Varo: Los Amantes, 1955

Remedios Varo: Remenance

Leonora Carrington

Leonor Fini: The ends of the earth, 1949

Alongside these, this clip pays tribute to two films. first is the brilliant Armenian director Sergei Parajanov, and his beautiful, surrealistic film from 1968 “The Color of Pomegranates

The second, is the philosophic and psychedelic film “Stalker“, By Andrei Tarkovsky:

I’m still trying to figure out the meaning of the rotating cube. it reminds me a bit of the idea of the cube of space – a model that represents human consciousness in various mystic and psychological theories.

the cube of space

Or the Metatron cube, that relates to sacred geometry:

From the feminine surrealism of the mother and witch archetype to the Whirling Dervishes, this clip is  all about altered states of consciousness and the search  for the divine. what was once in the realm of religious and mystic practice, later became the role of artists and poets, and now, say Madonna and Romanek, is present in pop culture, for millions of people to get a glimpse at.

Sports Special

This sweet animation was made  to illustrate the remarkable achievement of a no-hitter in a major league game game of Dock Ellis, a player for the Pittsburgh Pirates, while he was on acid back in 1970.

Since steroids are well known as performance enhancers, athletes are scrutinized to prevent their abuse. Psychedelics, on the other hand, seem to be a possible influence on the artist who designed this film for the 2012 London Olympic Games:

Following the last few videos featured here, here’s more of the hipster-electronic-retro80s’-psychedelia, apparently a new genre in the art of video-clipping.
