Psychedelic flamenco

21 Aug

There is nothing like watching a flamenco show while high. The intensity of music, the dancers, and the colorful lights in the caves are just mesmerizing.

Good flamenco is hard to get by if you are a tourist visiting in Spain. Flamenco is more of a people’s thing. People play and sing it spontaneously in the house and in the street. Flamenco in a club is a relatively unnatural concept.

Yet, fortunately, there is some amazing Flaemenco on you YouTube. This first video by the legendary Flamenco singer and dancer Carmen Amaya is just crazy with the energies, especially the last bit.

The video below displays some known flamenco artists in a home setting. I love the intensity of the setting, and the different relationships between the singers which reminds me in a way of the energies in some psychedelic ceremonies where people make music.

Another epic display of well-mannered madness by the lovely (early prog version of) Genesis. (also: witness Peter Gabriel transform from a very early proto goth into a beautiful flower)

Downtown Dubai New Year’s Eve 2015

18 May

New Year’s Eve 2015 has gone past, but it’s a shame to think that all that money spent on fireworks and glowing city lights was spent on one perishing moment in time, so I’d like to celebrate it again here on the DPV. One of the places which lavished the greatest sum of money on impressive fireworks the following year was Dubai, one of the richest and most awesomely designed cities in the world. Checking out their 2015 fireworks is a treat. Find the full 43 minutes film about the celebrations below.

“Celebration at Big Sur”- Baird Bryant and Johanna Demetrakas

28 Mar

“Celebration at Big Sur” is a 1969 film documenting the Folk Festival at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA. You can find the entire film in bits on youtube and it’s available as a DVD. In this 9 minute clip, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young perform “Down by the River”. The performance starts at about 49 seconds into the clip, but there is a lot of good vintage hippy stuff before and after the music.

After spending last week travelling the California coast, I’m in total Pacific Ocean bliss. I love seeing all the aerial shots of the coastline in this film almost as much as I love David Crosby’s fringe jacket and Stephen Stills’ geometric poncho. The Esalen Institute is still around. You can sign up for self actualization workshops and retreats through their website.

I took these photos last year at a campground in Big Sur. You can see the bridge in the first photo in the aerial shots. What I didn’t get a photo of, was the terribly cute sea otter that would swim around the cove with a seagull perched upon his little belly.

Single Wing Turquoise Bird : Excerpt Two from Invisible Writing

4 Jan

SWTB have performed live psychedelic visuals since the mid 1960s. After performing with bands including Cream, The Velvet Underground, Sly and the Family Stone, Pink Floyd, The Who, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and The Grateful Dead, the collective disbanded in 1975. Lucky for us, they re-formed in 2009 and have been performing with musician Miroslav Tadic.

Single Wing Turquoise Bird Says:

“This clip is a brief excerpt from “Invisible Writing”, a recording commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver as part of the traveling exhibition “West of Center: Art and the Counterculture Experiment in America”. The original 47-minute piece is a high definition record of live performance in which the eight artists of Single Wing Turquoise Bird project improvised dynamic compositions upon a single screen. Miroslav Tadic’s musical score forms a responsive weave of sound and image.
