Inspire Them

28 Nov

I’ve enjoyed a variety of profound privileges in my life, and I’m thankful. I’m very proud to have written for The Daily Psychedelic Video. There was a period a few years ago when I came to develop a wider appreciation for art. A handful of psychedelic videos were key in this, and they led me to make a hobby of “collecting” videos and showing them to friends. Many of them I found on this website.

Lately I haven’t had as much time as I would like to put together quality posts though. I don’t get to research the artists as much as I want to, and in turn have less to say about the videos I share. I missed my deadline on a couple occasions. And I’m sorry for all of that.

So, with this post marking the end of a full year of posting for the DPV, I’m stepping down from my weekly spot. Not without sharing a few more favorites though. I’ve wanted to share them with you for a long time.

The music is by a Chinese post rock band called Wang Wen, and they are quite possibly my current favorite musicians. The video is footage of a family’s trip to Thailand a few decades ago. This music video helped me realize that there was much that I needed to see Asia. I wish I could share the memories that this music and these visuals bring to mind for me and the feelings they stir. I come from small towns in the American Midwest, and I’ve fallen in love with another side of this world.

I’ve said before on this blog and frequently enough in conversation among friends that I have a deep love for motion. Cars, motorcycles, planes, roller coasters, snowboards, and now skateboards. This video showed me something about what it was like to ride one that I had somehow never understood before. I’ve taken up this hobby, and I can tell you that I have difficulty stopping and coming inside for the night. I just want to keep feeling the ride.

I always tell people I think this video is about the weekend, starting with Friday afternoon and working it’s way through to Sunday night. Some of my favorite nights with friends looked an awful lot like the parties seen here. Again, I wish I could share these memories for you, but I suppose this video will hopefully call your own memories to mind. So maybe that’s even better.

And for these last two, I’ll let their messages speak for themselves.

Thank you, Jared, for showing me this one.

Now here’s why I’ve selected all these videos. I’m afraid that I must admit that I can’t really call any of them truly psychedelic, which is what has prevented me from posting them thus far. But psychedelia is a twist of our reality. Often beautiful, sometimes terrifying. Many times enlightening.

And the theme of my weekly contributions was “What You Should Be, MTV.” These videos and the feelings I’ve described are what I would want MTV to be. Imagine that videos inspired our teenagers to want to see another part of the world. To be find passion for a hobby. To enjoy the company of friends and strangers. To love oneself. To embrace endings and live joyfully. That is the MTV of another reality, and what a beautiful twist it would be.

Thank you, Ido and co-contributors. Thank you, those who have shared videos with me.

Thank you, readers, fellow trippers of the Youtube galaxy.

As Seen On TV

11 Jul

There are videos that I know got some time on MTV and others I’m not sure about. Truthfully, I didn’t watch much of their programming when I came to learn that music videos weren’t actually much of a priority. I can think of a handful that I’d like you guys to see though. Maybe you saw them on MTV first, and if you enjoyed them, I’ll be the first to thank the network for bringing them to the people. If you haven’t seen them or even one of them, I’m glad the DPV has provided.

I, for one, somehow managed to mostly miss out on the Gorillaz when the project was at its most popular. Years later, I glanced over a friend’s shoulder as he watched this video.

I had to know what was going on. After watching all their other videos and reading up a bit, I’ve got to admit that I haven’t really found any clear reasons for anything that’s going on, but I think it’s cool as hell regardless. Thank you, Grey, for showing me this one.

Once again, I find myself amazed by simplicity, and this video astounds me. A great deal of editing or design is often involved in the creation of psychedelic art, but in this case it’s just raw performance. Never in my life will I be able to pull off a dance like this.

One friend of mine told me he distinctly remembered the morning he saw this video for the first time. He was just about to leave for school, but ended up being late because he just had to stay and watch this masterpiece to the end.

The chances that you haven’t heard the song are flat out nonexistent. Mmmmaybe, just maybe though, this video will today reach a new set of eyeballs out there for the first time.

Nothing groundbreaking going on here, but damn if it’s not catchy. This one is just a guilty pleasure.

And finally, a caricature of all the ills of mankind. No subtlety here.

I hope at least one caught your fancy, whether for the first time or for the first time in a while.

What Is Freedom ? Chapter 1 “Yesod ” – “Our fReedom ” – New Rainbow Order

29 Jun

Guy Nastro goes around asking friends from the Israeli psytrance scene what freedom is for them, mixing their answers with a lot of kicking psytrance music, nature, juggling, Krishamurti and Terence Mckenna. The beautiful video transmission about the power of freedom is like a treatise, a prayer and a spiritual voyage, all at once. It calls upon us to realize our own freedom and comprises a powerful and inspiring document of a dissident searching for freedom, in a time when freedom is under attack.

This video is the first in a series of videos which will accompany Nastro on his travels around Europe looking for a land to buy. The last episode, Nastro says, should be the episode where he will already have his own land. He then intends to start a second video series which will focus on how to build a futuristic, psychedelic agricultural village.

Downtown Dubai New Year’s Eve 2015

18 May

New Year’s Eve 2015 has gone past, but it’s a shame to think that all that money spent on fireworks and glowing city lights was spent on one perishing moment in time, so I’d like to celebrate it again here on the DPV. One of the places which lavished the greatest sum of money on impressive fireworks the following year was Dubai, one of the richest and most awesomely designed cities in the world. Checking out their 2015 fireworks is a treat. Find the full 43 minutes film about the celebrations below.

Full DJ set by Sydney Producer Eugene Ward featuring visuals from psychedelica’s bag of tricks and some nice eclectic house and techno. Check out the set-list taken from creating a fictional 90’s London label ‘White Link Recordings’ (including how he created fake biographic profiles for the ‘artists’). “These videos are not about metafiction, they’re about inspiring an emotional response based on sound pastiche and aesthetic direction.”
Read about the evolution of the project Here or check out Ward’s other videos. (The title is the MD5 code generated for the word ‘White’.)

A friend of mine has told me he thinks this first one is a reference to a folk tale that involves a creature luring ordinary people out to the sea, appearing during a festival. He’s also told me that the vocalist’s accent is quite funny to most Swedes.

And this one is just a dream come true after having sat through a considerable number of stuffy church services growing up. Winner of a Grammy.

Thank you, Kyle, for introducing me.

Seeeds of Love

14 Feb

Valentine’s Day seems to be a pretty polarizing holiday. If you’re sharing it with someone special this year, the first video is probably what you’d like to see. If not, and you’re in the mood for some schadenfreude, the second is about a married brute going out to the clubs and then being blackmailed by the one he pursues.

Los Jóvenes

29 Nov

As this is my first entry in this column, I feel I should explain that MTV was a bitter disappointment to me when I was growing up. As I understood it, it was supposed to be a channel that connected teenagers with what was cool. I also had the wild idea that music videos were supposed to be a bit of a priority to them. Clearly, this is not the case.

Then, a couple years ago, I saw a few music videos that made me realize that some really interesting stuff is going on within this medium. And it pissed me off that the only way for me to find it was to plunge online video archives and click links to related video after related video on Youtube in hopes of making another wondrous find.

Well, I’ve been at it for a while, and MTV, you need to get with it. This stuff is cool, and it’s worthy of our teenagers.

My first selection is a celebration of youth. I can’t tell you how moved I am by this video, as it seems to me to be about the new experiences and crazy little things that teens get up to in their idle moments. To me, it’s a celebration of physical sensations.

And if you’ll permit me to stick with Spanish musicians and this style of filming, allow me to next direct your attention to Bombay by El Guincho. An intro in the style of Carl Sagan, some gorgeous half-nude women, 70’s graininess, visuals that last for an instant but I guarantee will stick with you… What’s not to love? Directed by Canada, who have done quite a few projects that I consider masterpieces, the video for Ice Cream by Battles being among them and already in our archives.

Last one for today, I’ll just let it speak for itself. If you like the music artist though, check out the video for Colombo as well.
