Dead Man’s Trip by Liam Key
11 MayShort film based on real experiences of increased resolution in mental imagery.
Dreams, the imagination and stored visual imagery in memory play an important role in all our daily lives. They are the basis of invention and use cognitive processes which are not well understood by even the leading neuroscientists. This short film is a testament to the brains ability to see things with the mind’s eye clearly and precisely as 3-dimensional visual imagery.
All 3D models, animation and musical score by Australian visual artist and researcher Liam Key.
Liam has a PhD work “Using 3D animation to visualise N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) complex visual hallucinations”, which was unfortunately rejected due to major errors in terms of the scientific method. I still recommend to check it out as he worked directly with Rick Strassman M.D, developing 12 x 3D animated scenes of complex visual hallucinations recorded in the most recent human DMT study done in the past 40 years.

Created with ferrofluid, UV lights, fluorescent watercolours, paints, inks and oils. With the presence of a magnetic field, ferrofluid and kaleidoscopic substances form mesmerising and surreal patterns. Using a HFR camera and macro lens, I captured these visuals before they vanished back into darkness.

The Devils // Ken Russell, 1971

Ken Russell’s controversial 1971 film incorporates sexually explicit hallucinatory sequences into this story based on the supposed demonic possessions in that took place in 17th Century Loudon, France.
An order of Ursuline nuns begin to exhibit wild, uncontrolled behavior thought to be led by Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed), a proud priest, who has recently gained political control of Loudon. Sister Jeanne des Anges (Vanessa Redgrave), the sexually repressed hunchback Mother Superior of the convent becomes infatuated with Grandier, and her striking sexual fantasies haunt her guilty conscious.
Once word of Grandier’s secret marriage to another woman reaches Jeanne, she collapses into fits of hysteria and claims to have been possessed by the Devil through Grandier. Other nuns in the convent also claim to be possessed and the convent explodes into a frenzy of sexual outbursts and bizarre public exorcisms.
Russell boldly depicts the effects of sexual oppression mixed with religious mania. The censored scenes of the “demonic possessions” include a psychedelic orgy of naked nuns “raping” a statue of Christ and Sister Jeanne masturbating with a human bone. The uncut version of The Devils is a mind blowing, audacious exploration of ecstasy (both religious and sexual).
